Adios Jammy

It was the summer of 97.I had bought 6 posters of Dravid from a street vendor after going through a pile that had tens of posters of Sachin, Azhar and Jadeja but very few of Rahul. After contemplating for a fair amount of time, I pasted these on the walls of my room. Wow, the sight amazed me. As a teenage school kid, I was thrilled to see my idol's pictures around me. Not for long did my happiness last , as Dad was furious by my act of 'defacing' the walls. Down came the posters and then tucked into my book shelf. I was disappointed. But I thought, it didn't matter if I couldn't put those pictures on the wall, I would always be devoted to my idol. Rarely does a school kid's wish hold good for years.

More than a decade had passed by. The media reported yesterday of a BCCI press release informing about a press conference to be attended by Rahul Dravid and BCCI president Srinivasan. I wondered if it could be anything else under the sun but his retirement. Nothing else made sense. It had to be the inevitable. I shed a tear! My heart cringed at the thought of looking at an Indian test batting line up sans Dravid. It was going to be a matter of fact soon.

A lot happened between these two events. What started as a teenage obsession grew into something big. Something that made me feel that he was bigger than the game of cricket for me. May be I was wrong or may be not. I stopped thinking about it.

It all started with the newspaper articles highlighting the efforts of a young batsmen who scored back to back centuries in the semis and then the finals to help Karnataka win the Ranji trophy after a gap of 13 years. I was curious. The articles shouted out loud that this batsman was not in the mould of the superstar cricketers who were representing the country that time. My curiosity increased and I dug up a few articles that had focused on the Karnataka team earlier that season. I was impressed!

The test debut cemented my impression and as the cliche goes - the rest is history. Over the years, he has given me and rest of the countless fans a lot of glorious moments to celebrate and cherish. As I write these words, a lot of those moments flash before my eyes. Tough to forget the innings like that 1st day gritty batting at Headingley, the double century at Adelaide, crucial twin 50s at Kingston(he had the top 2 scores in that match that saw both the teams get bowled out in both the innings), majestic double century at Rawalpindi and last but not the least when he and VVS showed the holy finger to Australia in Kolkata.

I practiced to have his stance whenever I held a bat in my hand. Sometimes even without it. I always wanted to play those straight drives, cover drives,on drives, leg glances and square cuts. I've always wanted to focus hard on my objectives and persist giving my best. Have I succeeded in doing any of these correctly ? I don't know! Frankly, I don't care. I'm just happy that I've tried to be like him and that is something that gives me immense satisfaction.

In a country obsessed with stars, why is Dravid different from so many others ? For me, it was the non-flashy, unassuming and elegant persona of his that showed his real self. Like many others, I looked up to him as he was a personification of the fact that natural talent need not take precedence over hard work and determination. Nothing seems impossible and improbable if one shows perseverance and patience.

I may not watch international cricket with the same level of devotion again. But, I will always pray and hope that the next time when the scorecard says 10/1 or 20/1 and a batsman walks out of the pavillion to the ground, he has at least half the focus and fortitude Rahul Dravid had! The future of Indian cricket will be in safe hands then!

Syad!

RCB lost to CSK in the semis of CL T20!

It was as if the force above didn't want RCB to win...Steyn got injured taking that blinder of a catch of Hussey.. RCB's bowling plans went for a toss and everyone just lost faith in their abilities!!

Batting didn't start on a good note as well..None of the batsmen could step up to the occasion and take the team through.. :(

It was the last match the current squad played...With the next auction happening sometime next month or so, it potentially could be different set of players who the fans will have to cheer for..

Hmmm...the mood is dull, glum and depressing...something strong and pleasant is needed to lift the spirits up...a hat trick by Rooney or anyone else against Bolton on Sunday would do...

Lets see!

Bucha saga!

Deja Vu!! A last minute blog post before I set my foot out of Romania!!

It has been more 2 months into my stay and less than 3 hours to go before I start my journey back to base.

Last time I was here it was the october of 2008. I left hoping I would be back soon. But, things changed and I moved into different projects. My manager wanted me to discover more in Africa and I just nodded to his orders. Hence, the trip to South Africa and Mozambique. Relevant blog posts can be found. :-)

So, once again the cycle of life came back to same point and I was asked to travel to Romania again. So, here I'm back in South Eastern Europe in a place called Bucharest that boasts to be the capital of Romania.

The place I lived in last time wasn't all too great and was very uncomfortable for me.It was a 1 BHK apartment but I didnt like it much as it was cramped and was kinda haunted looking place. So, first thing I hoped for a change was a good place to stay at. Work would have anyways been as hectic as last time , if not more. So, I had no great hopes on that front.

To my good fotune, I was actually given a better place and it kinda set the tone well.

A kitchen that I hardly visited for the 1st week of my stay was bit busy since then. The highlight of this trip has been my attempts at cooking. Sad, bad and pathetic at times. But, interesting nevertheless. The responsibility I felt when I went for grocery shopping is unmatched. :-) I used to feel as if I've to cook and feed the whole of Romania and people are looking upto me. :D

One thing that excited me the most about being in Bucharest was getting a chance to savour the famed 'European Architecture'. And I wasn't disappointed. My weekend strolls around the city gave me sights of some beautiful buildings and my camera was in for a treat.

The first month of the stay was filled with IPL and end of Football season. Some disappointment when RCB under used RD and also couldn't go beyond semis. But, getting the 3rd position was a consolation of sorts.

Witnessing Utd crash out of Champs league and lose out to Blues in League race was disheartening. But, it was pleasant to see the way we fought back everytime we were pushed into a corner(not the footballing corner). Lots of heart to take from this and enough for us to come back roaring next season. Watch out Chels!

For last 2 weeks or so, I was just waiting to wind up all the pending stuff and land in Bangalore so that I can get back to my own self.

From all my visits to foreign land so far, what I've learned the most is to appreciate others' culture. We all are so different yet so same!!

Last evening was one of the most adventurous evenings in my stay here. Rajesh bhaiyya wanted me to get a Cyclocomputer for him and I set out on an expedition to track the shop down and buy it. On their website it all seemed too easy to spot. I set the google maps on my phone for that place and was more than sure that it would be a cakewalk to trace the shop using the maps.

30-40 mins into my expedition, I realised that I was lost!! :D Google maps has a precision range of 20-30 metres, I guess. I took quite a few wrong roads at many junctions and ended up on streets with no human presence at all or so it seemed. I was all cracked up at first and then I slowly figured out that I shouldnt have done something stupid like this just the day before my exit. :D :D

It took me 10 more mins to trace my way back and find a taxi. Showed him the maps on my phone and asked him to take me there. He was delighted looking at it and said , "Ahaaa GPSsss". There are very few taxis in the city that do not have GPS navigation system installed. This guy was one of them. :-P

He forgot that he has to take me there and started asking me questions about the maps application in his broken english. And then he said, "I GPS, phone want want..You internet get..My phone...GPS..".. I understood that he also wants to get it installed on his phone. I didn't say that I would do it. But, all I could say was, "Ok.ok..I'll do it..ok..". He then took out his phone and it was a basic samsung model that I don't think even was a colour one. :-( I was just hoping that he wouldn't force me to get google maps working on it..

I had to get going towards the cycle shop. So, I gave him a deal, "First shop then phone...we go now...ok ?".. He was so happy listening to that and said,"Great my friend..Great.." :D :D

But, my expedition had to end on a sad note as the shop did not have stock of the item I wanted to buy. :-( I wish I had more time to search around and buy it but sadly I was cramped up!!

Also, luckily the taxi guy forgot about the maps and didnt ask me again!!

Finally, I'm now to set for the take-off and will keep thinking of these few minor things in time to come..

Bye bye Bucharest... La revedere...

Maputo mania!!

Its my 34th day here in Maputo

But, It seems like 340 days since I've been here.

Especially when I was supposed to travel back to Bangalore on 14th.
Shit happens!!

The plan changed at the last moment and my stay was extended till 23rd, as of now.:D

I was precisely 4 hours away from the flight when I was informed about the change in plans. Damn it!

Anyways, I have got used to things like these now. Thats the best thing to do. If you can’t change any particular part of your life, however hard you try, then just get used to it. :D

Maputo isn’t too bad a place to live in. Pretty good, I must say. The streets are not deserted like the ones in Johannesburg. There is no general hysteria about civic safety as there haven’t been any incidents too often in recent times.

The hotel I stay at, is about 100-150 meters from the seashore. The vast, never ending coa
st line of Indian Ocean stares into my eyes whenever I look at it.

I h
aven’t had much time to go out anywhere. Had been to a Jazz concert few weeks ago and then went to two Indian restaurants. :D And also took astroll along the shore , sometime ago. That’s the local sight-seeing I’ve done so far.

The last 3 months have been very demanding and stressful, professionally. I hardly remember a non-work related event in this period. Hang on, I do remember. I used to sleep for 6-7 hours every day/night (based on when I decided to sleep)

Hopefully, this slog-fest is gonna see an end sometime soon!

It could be a serene period for few months after that or may be another hell-ride!!

I’ll keep you all posted. :D

October 14, 2009

Maputo has made me go crazy!!

I'm finally retiring to bed after 20 hours of work!! Of course, I took a few breaks otherwise I would have vanished into thin air :D

More details to follow!!

Bits and Pieces : 26-Jul-09

Hmmm…

Date is 26, Day is Sunday, Month is July and Year is 2009. Nothing special. Just FYI.

Quite a few interesting things have happened in last few weeks.

A glimpse of those “interesting” things

• I have moved on to a new project (not really a new one but new to me). That makes my visit to Johannesburg in Feb-March this year as the last one for me, to that palce. After 2.5 yrs and 5 visits to Johannesburg, I’ve realized that it was not a bad place at all. There is more to Africa than the crime and poverty that gets highlighted in rest of the world. On professional side, it was getting kinda repetative to me but I’ll forever remember the experience that I have gone through in these visits. After all, it was my first visit to a place outside India.

• Dell finally said that they couldn’t recover data from the “crashed” hard disk from my office laptop. Damn!! Lost chunks of data both official and personal. Sad!

• I finally got to put on an original Manchester United jersey. Courtesy of Venkata Srinivas Kishan’s colleague who had been to England. A dream come true. Next one on the line would be to be in Old Trafford (Manchester United’s Stadium) for a match against Liverpool. Haha. I laugh at it myself. Lets see if I can make this dream come true, somehow!!

• Rahul Dravid has been selected among the 30 probables for Champions Trophy to be held in South Africa this year. Woohoo. Now, that is what I term as “pleasant surprise”. Finally, some sense has got into selectors’ head. Hope the sanity continues and RD plays for team in the tournament.

• Michael “Amazing” Owen has landed in Machester United and has been handed over the coveted No.7 Jersey. MO7 is what he’ll be known as from now on. :-) It was David Beckham and this guy who captured my attention and made me get stuck to the football mania way back in 2001-2002. To see him in my club is like brilliant, effing brilliant!!!

• I watched the worst Akshay Kumar movie ever (watched by me in a theatre).Such a sick movie.Pathetic.Irritating to the core. I mean, what was the producer thinking when he agreed to make a movie on such a story or the lack of it ??!! I was disappointed, to say the least.

• My quiz team has been torn apart by the cruel world of of of, I don’t know what!!! Chaitanya(CDya, pronounced as “seedya”) has relocated to Pune and that leaves only me and Santu(Savanur that is) in the concrete jungles of Bengaluru. Sad!

• Damn these Congressis. They said that the Kargil was NDA’s achievement and the 10th anniversary of the victory in the WAR should not be a nationwide celebration. When will politicians come out of this petty world of theirs where their acts are achievements and others achievements are mere actions with no worth ?!?!?! I feel sad for the people who lost their relatives and friends in the war. They would have been really hurt by this kinda behaviour of the government.Sad!

• Beckham is open to a plan of coming back to Manchester United. Brilliant. I mean, that is where all the football started for me, Beckham at Manchester United. I know that this news is as if it has come out of a story book. But, one can’t completely rule out the possibility.

Can’t think of anything else right now!!

Anyways, I wasn’t expecting to write about these many things. :-D

Cool.

The power is back now and I can post this on the blog.

Couldn’t think of a better timepass with the laptop’s battery staring at me with a wicked smile.

Bits and Pieces : 20-Jun-09

Long time, no see!

Its been almost 8 months since the last post.Pretty long!! Long enough to make me forget about actually having a blog. But, I somehow remembered it.

Right then , without much ado lets get to the bits and pieces that are in a marathon in my head right now :

  • 24-May-09 : Royal Challengers Bangalore were defeated by Deccan Chargers in the finals of Indian Premier League 2009.Sad! Ridiculed by many(including Bangaloreans) for following a team that languished at last but one position in the last year's tournament.I always knew the team had all the abilites to lift the cup but wasn't getting things in the right place. Was proud by the performances of the players in the team but was devastated in the end as we just lost by ridiculously low margin of 6 runs.Ridiculous because the way the batsmen goofed it up in the end.Almost got a chance of witnessing Rahul Dravid and Anil Kumble lifting a trophy at an international tournament.(I know the name is Indian Premier League but still...)

  • 27-May-09 : After the IPL devastation ceremony 3 days ago, I was looking forward to witness Man Utd lifting the Champions League by defeating Barcelona in the finals.Almost all pundits(including me) predicted a tight match and a close finish. That didn't happen!! Barcelona stamped all over Man Utd and made them look like School kids!! The loss was frustrating, irritating, insulting!! This lead to the 2nd loss in the finals for my teams within 4 days!! (RCB was the first if you have forgotten it already)

  • 05-Jun-09 : My dear camera Canon S5 IS's flash was on strike for last few months.I begged my Dad to take it to the service centre thats pretty close to his office(well, realtively..).He obliged and got the job done. But, as the service took time, I couldn't carry it along with me in Goa trip that happened in between this post and the last one(dates, I mean).Never mind!

  • 12-Jun-09 : It was 1.30am and serenity surrounded me! Then, I almost screamed my heart out when I read this on my laptop screen - "Internal hard drive not detected".I was thinking of the dreaded "C" word. The Air France flight 447 from Rio De Janeiro to Paris met the same fate and since then this word was hovering around in my head.A #^&@ CRASH!! My hard disk had crashed!!! The sys admin at my office confirmed the next day that It was indeed a crash and would send it to Dell service centre to check if the data can be recovered. I was doomed. It took me a day to regain my senses.I hadn't taken a backup of the data even once since I put my hands on the lappie and was in risk of losing all the official mails, project info, lotsa personal stuff and etc etc.As it stands today, I'm still waiting for the final word from Dell guys on the Data recovery.I'm praying day and night hoping to get the data back.

  • 15-Jun-09 : Was listening to music on my Nokia 5800 phone and all off a sudden it threw some memory card error and stopped playing music.Thought it would be a regular glitch with memory cards that I had experienced in my earlier phone.I then restarted my phone to see if it would change anything. What an idea, sirjee!! I couldn't see a single piece of data that I had saved on the memory card.I turned towards "File Manager" and saw the dreaded "C" word(not the same one)!!We curse our politicians and cops and govt officials sunk in this. And now, I was looking at my phone that had a memory card whick took the same path. The memory card was CORRUPTED!! Nokia shop guys told me half an hour ago that I would need to hit the Service centre to get the problem sorted out.Lets see if I can sort this out at the earliest!

Thats the story so far! Uff, took me a while to type.

Also not to forget the disastrous campaign of Indian team in T20 WC.Its better left unsaid. They have disappointed more than a billion people, more with their attitude than their cricketing skills.

Sad but true! The last 5-6 weeks have been disappointing.Every time I look for something to cheer for, it turns sour and leaves me shattered.

Never mind!!

Hoping for better things in weeks/months/years to come.

Hope kills none as someone said!

:-)
